You’re Not Electing a Pastor
By Brother Boltoph OSB
The most common objection to President Trump seems to be his past. He was pro-abortion, he’s been married three times, he was a democrat, he’s brash. Yeah, so what?
Ronald Reagan was a democrat and divorced and remarried. Johnson was a racist pig. JFK was a man-whore. So was FDR. We’ve never had a perfect president with a spotless past. And NEWSFLASH: A lot of priests and religious have pasts that they are not proud of either. There are many who were pulled from the worst of human conditions, called by God to serve him, their past notwithstanding. I know because I am one. I know because I know some. God, in his wisdom, grace, and mercy, removed me from a life of destruction and placed me where I am today and he has done it for countless men and women through the ages. Some of you wouldn’t vote for the Apostle Paul because his past was worse than Donald Trump could ever have imagined.
People can and do change and though human, with all their faults, can be used of God. Had St. Peter been running for president he probably would have lost given the reasoning people use today. He was impetuous, hot-headed, and dishonest at times. And yet Jesus looked beyond that and used him. Not once did Jesus say to either St. Paul or St. Peter, “Sorry, guys, your past is just too much for me to work with.” Not once. Ever.
I am not comparing Donald Trump to the Apostles. Far from it. But the point is that this objection to his presidency given his past is, especially for Christians, ludicrous and intellectually dishonest. We preach the saving grace and power of God to change lives every day and yet use this man’s past against him. It is especially maddening when this president has fought time and time again for Christian morals. Do I agree with everything he does? No, of course not. But in the face of an opposing party that serves Satan, that espouses not only the killing of innocent children in the womb but those who they deem no longer useful to society the opposition from supposed Christians is outrageous at best and a denial of the very faith they claim to hold.
He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Micah 7:19
That’s where Donald Trump’s sins, if he has repented, are. And we have no way of knowing if that is the case but to assume that they are not is playing God. That promise is as good for him as it is for the imperfect Christians who oppose him.
You don’t have to like Donald Trump. You don’t have to vote for him. But if you use his past as an excuse to vote for the servants of Moloch you are in effect denying the power of God to change even the worst of sinners, a title St. Paul gave himself. And you will be guilty of murder; the blood of innocent children and those deemed useless to society will be on your hands. And if the past can be continually held against Donald Trump, it can be held against you and that should scare the hell out of you.
